Properly diagnosed and designed, custom-fabricated mouth guards are essential in the prevention of athletic orofacial injuries. It is estimated that as many as one third of all injuries treated by dentists are sports related and more than 200,000 injuries to the mouth and jaw occur each year in the United States.
Professionally made athletic mouth guards provide protection to the teeth by distributing the force of a blow over all the surrounding teeth and gums. They also protect against neck injuries, and serve as a shock absorber for concussive forces affecting the lower jaw.
Although over 90% of athletic mouth guards worn are either stock mouthguards or of the boil-and-bite variety, these do not provide the required protective properties in the event of an accident. They do not fit well, and are bulky leading to the general belief that all athletic mouth guards are uncomfortable, and interfere with speaking and breathing. A properly made custom mouth guard is very comfortable, making it more likely to be worn regularly. It can also be fabricated with a helmet attachment if desired.
Custom-fabricated athletic mouth guards are not just for football and hockey players. Recent findings show that soccer players are more likely than football players to sustain an orofacial injury, and a basketball player’s risk is twice that of a football player. Don’t wait for that accident to happen before your teeth are protected!
